On the first of April 1867 the Straits Settlements became a Crown Colony but it wasn't until 1871 that her first coins
were struck with the copper being struck in 1872. The first twenty cent was struck at the Royal mint
in London. The reverse design features a partitioned ring design with 20 in the inner circle
with the legend, STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. TWENTY CENTS with the date following. The
obverse features the young head portrait of Queen Victoria as designed by William Wyon. The Victorian twenty cent
series houses some of the most important and scarce coins of the colony with mintages starting
at a low 16,000. Even in average grade a complete set may take many years to assemble while a high grade set would take a
lot of patience and capital to source. The key dates would be the 1871 and 1873 with
mintages of just 16,000 and 30,000 respectively with every date in the series requiring significant investment
to obtain in mint state.
